Amber Eggers, 'Love After Lockup' star, dies at 41

Amber Eggers, a reality television personality who appeared on the 2019 second season of We TV's 'Love After Lockup,' died Sept. 3 of acute liver failure at a hospital in Atlanta. She was 41.

Her death was confirmed to TMZ by her mother, Monica Eggers, and was first announced by friends on social media, according to Deadline. Eggers had been admitted to the hospital several days earlier, after she was not feeling well, her mother said. A post from friends said she entered the hospital on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with liver failure, two days before she died.

Admitted days before her death

Eggers had suffered a mini-stroke in July and was recovering at home when she was taken back to the hospital, according to the social media post announcing her death. She had written about the stroke herself about a month before she died, in a Facebook post from Aug. 5 that mentioned it alongside her birthday.

Her mother did not offer further details on Eggers's condition, E! News reported. The post announcing her death said, "The doctors did everything they could, but in the end, her body just couldn't keep fighting," and described Eggers, who had spent much of the past year in and out of hospitals, as a fighter.

"Love After Lockup viewers and cast alike love Amber very much," the post read, before adding, "We laughed with her, worried about her, and cheered her on through everything she faced."

She had been back in the hospital with liver failure for two days before she died on Thursday, according to Deadline.

Her role on the show

'Love After Lockup' follows couples who meet in person for the first time after years of letters and visits while one partner is incarcerated, then tracks the ups and downs of their relationships once the inmate is released and the two are together in person. Eggers was featured in its second season, which aired in 2019 on We TV.

She was serving a four-year prison sentence for drug trafficking when she was filmed. Her storyline centered on Vincent Gonzalez, a man she had begun dating while behind bars and whose romance with her unfolded during her incarceration.

Gonzalez proposed to Eggers while she was still incarcerated, one of the moments that made her a familiar face to the series' audience. The couple broke up after she was released from prison, and the engagement never led to a wedding.

While incarcerated, Eggers grew close to Michelle 'Puppy' Deaton, a former cellmate she had met in prison. The show followed a romantic thread between them that later settled into friendship, and the two appeared together in cameo roles across the franchise for years afterward.

Her cameo appearances continued into later seasons of the franchise and its spinoff series, 'Life After Lockup,' which she joined in 2020.

A year of health crises

Eggers's health had been failing for at least a year, according to Deadline. Her sister, Erin Hyndman, launched a GoFundMe page in May 2025 after Eggers was hospitalized with severe pneumonia and a bacterial infection in her blood, an illness that E! News reported had left her in critical condition.

The pneumonia developed into sepsis and organ failure, and she was placed on life support at one point during that 2025 stay, according to TV Shows Ace. She was later moved out of intensive care as her family waited for signs of recovery.

The medical bills were putting a strain on the family, Erin wrote when she created the page. Days later, she reported that Eggers had come out of the ICU and begun physical therapy to regain strength in her legs and to walk again.

More than a year later, Eggers was hospitalized again after she began feeling unwell, her mother told TMZ. That admission, on Sept. 1, came after the July mini-stroke and a stretch of recovery at home, and it ended with her death two days later.

Tributes from cast and network

We TV and the 'Love After Lockup' account paid tribute to Eggers in a joint statement shared on Instagram on Sept. 4, calling her "an original and unforgettable member" of the show's family.

"She was a bright light, who shared her life story with courage and authenticity, and we are honored to have been a part of her journey over several years," the statement said. It added, "Our hearts are with her family and friends who held her close."

Friends and viewers posted condolences as the news spread, with several recalling Eggers as a genuine presence on a show built around volatile relationships. "One of the few people on Love After Lockup I liked, she seemed so genuine," one viewer wrote. Others said they had felt, through watching, that she was a kind soul.

The post that announced her death closed with a farewell: "Thank you for being you, Amber. You are going to be missed."

'Love After Lockup' is one of We TV's popular reality series, following couples through the strain of incarceration and release. Eggers's story ran through several of its seasons, from her original appearance to her later cameos.

Eggers's death closed a year in which her family had repeatedly asked for help and hoped she would recover. She had survived the 2025 hospitalization that left her on life support and required physical therapy before she could walk, only to return to the hospital in her final days with the liver failure that killed her.
