Kyle Kennedy, RFK granddaughter and educator, dies at 42
Kennedy died Sept. 21 at her Westwood home, six years after a spinal cord injury.

Kyle Francis Kennedy, an educator and a granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, died on Sept. 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, six years after a spinal cord injury left her paralyzed. She was 42.
Blessed with a formidable intellect, dry wit, and beauty, she will be remembered for her devotion to her children Conor, Josephine, and Declan, and her support for educational reform for disadvantaged children and for people living with disabilities.
Her death became public on Oct. 20, nearly a month later, through an obituary posted on the Burke Funeral Homes website. The notice says she died peacefully at home and gives no cause. Burke Funeral Homes said she had spent most of her life in Massachusetts, where she built a career devoted to early childhood education.
What has not been disclosed
Kennedy suffered a severe spinal cord injury in 2020 that resulted in long term paralysis, disability and other medical challenges. It was not disclosed how she was hurt, NBC News reported, and the notice gives no month and no location for the injury.
The years that followed brought struggles but Kyle fought to maintain her dry wit and determination through it all, trying to be the best possible mother to her sons and caring for her two beloved, ill-behaved Wheaten terriers.
Westwood Town Clerk Dottie Powers told NBC News that Kennedy died at her home in the town and that the cause of death is pending. NBC News reported that she had spent the last several years of her life unable to walk.
Kennedy was the niece of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. health and human services secretary, according to the Associated Press.
A career in classrooms
Kennedy was born in Washington, D.C., on July 6, 1984, and spent most of her childhood in Cohasset, Massachusetts. She attended Milton Academy, where she excelled academically and earned awards for her Latin scholarship, and then went to Georgetown University in Washington, majoring in history.
A semester abroad in Florence, Italy, left a lasting mark, sending her home with a love of Tuscan Renaissance art and a talent for making pasta from scratch. She later earned a master of science in early education from Pace University and a master of education in education policy and management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
After college she joined Teach for America and taught for two years in New York City public schools, an experience that launched her career in education. She became an advocate for more equitable elementary education and for charter schooling.
Her later work was with technology companies focused on reforming and improving school curricula, and as a coach for educators working with young students. Fox News described her as an instructional coach for primary school educators. No dates or employers are given for that period.

The obituary describes a child who outran her peers on playgrounds and lacrosse fields and who played card games to win.
The 2019 Boston Marathon
Kennedy ran the Boston Marathon in 2019 under her married name, Kyle Kerr, NBC News reported. Her family wrote that she finished in a driving rainstorm and beat her own father's time by 20 minutes. The injury came the next year.
Her father, Michael LeMoyne Kennedy, the sixth child of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, was 39 when he was fatally injured on Dec. 31, 1997, slamming into a tree while playing ski-football on an icy Aspen slope in Colorado, NBC News reported.
Her mother, Victoria Denise Gifford, is a daughter of the former NFL player and sportscaster Frank Gifford and of Maxine Avis Ewart, and a stepdaughter of Kathie Lee Gifford, People reported.

Kennedy was predeceased by an infant daughter, Josie, the twin sister of her son Conor, who died after a few short days of life. She held Josie's memory close for the rest of her own, and the notice lists three children: Conor, Josephine and Declan.
Advocacy and public appearances
After the injury, Kennedy began advocating for people living with disabilities and testified at the Massachusetts State House in a hearing on discrimination in health care for people with disabilities. The obituary gives no date for the testimony and does not name the committee; the Associated Press described it as a hearing before the state legislature.
Kennedy appeared at the family's human rights awards in New York. Photo captions published by Fox News place her onstage at the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Awards on Dec. 12, 2018, and at the awards dinner at the New York Hilton on Dec. 11, 2013, with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Ethel Kennedy and Kerry Kennedy.
The family on screen
The Daily Beast reported that Ryan Murphy's Love Story series brought the so-called Kennedy curse back into the public eye earlier this year by depicting the plane crash that killed John F. Kennedy Jr., 38, and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, 33.
Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in 1968 after winning California's Democratic presidential primary, five years after his brother, President John F. Kennedy, was killed in Dallas, the Associated Press noted. In 1969, after the Chappaquiddick crash that killed campaign staffer Mary Jo Kopechne, Senator Ted Kennedy publicly wondered whether "some awful curse did actually hang over all the Kennedys," according to The Daily Beast.
Who she leaves behind
Kennedy is survived by her sons, Conor, 12, and Declan, 10; her former husband, Liam Kerr; her mother, Victoria Denise Gifford; her brother, Michael LeMoyne Kennedy Jr.; and her sister, Rory Gifford Kennedy. She was one of 34 grandchildren of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, the Boston Globe reported.
Maeve Fahey Kennedy Townsend, 40, and her 8-year-old son, Gideon, went missing in a canoe in Chesapeake Bay in Maryland in 2020, the Globe reported. Authorities said at the time that strong winds and heavy seas pulled them out into the bay after the two got into the canoe in Shady Side, Md., to recover a ball.
Saoirse Kennedy Hill, another granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, was 22 when she was found unresponsive at the family compound in Hyannis Port in August 2019. Her cause of death was a toxic mixture of methadone, alcohol and prescription drugs, according to her death certificate. David Kennedy, one of their 11 children, died of a drug overdose in 1984 at 28, The Daily Beast noted.
Tatiana Schlossberg, a granddaughter of President John F. Kennedy, died in December 2025 of acute myeloid leukemia at 35. The Daily Beast described her illness as a rare mutation of the disease and cited an essay she published in The New Yorker shortly before her death, in which she wrote about her mother, Caroline Kennedy.
Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family's life, and there's nothing I can do to stop it.
Services for Kyle Kennedy were private. The obituary describes photographs of her bundled head to toe in a down jacket inside a Scandinavian ice cave and smiling beside a band of mountain gorillas in Uganda.
