Lucia Sisic, reigning Miss Austria, dies at 22

Lucia Sisic, the reigning Miss Austria who spoke openly about a lifelong congenital heart condition, has died at age 22, leaving the country without a national titleholder.

Mission Austria, the organization that runs the Miss and Mister Austria competitions, confirmed the death in a tribute posted to social media on Monday. It said it had learned of her passing with "great shock and deep sorrow" and remembered her for the person she was beyond the crown. The message was signed by chief executive Kerstin Rigger and her husband, Jörg.

An official cause of death has not been made public, and the organization did not say when she died. Sisic had a well-documented history of heart problems, but there has been no confirmation that her congenital condition was connected to her death, which Austrian outlets described as unexpected.

From Miss Vienna to Miss Austria

Sisic, who was from Vienna, rose through Austria's pageant scene in 2024. She was named Miss Vienna that January and won the national Miss Austria title on Sept. 10 at Vienna Fashion Week, the high point of a rapid climb through the country's competition circuit.

She remained the reigning Miss Austria at the time of her death because no further contest had been staged after her victory. Mission Austria held no national pageant in 2025 or 2026, a gap the Kurier attributed to a lack of sponsors, which kept Sisic in the role for two years.

Sisic said the jury that crowned her Miss Vienna had not known about her illness. She had chosen not to tell the jury, she said, because she did not want her health to sway a decision she wanted judged on its own terms.

Christopher Dengg was named Mister Austria at the same ceremony, and neither title was contested again.

Born with a heart defect

Sisic was born with a heart valve defect that required treatment beginning shortly after her birth. She underwent seven heart procedures over the course of her life, according to Kronen Zeitung, a run of operations that began when she was a small child and continued into adulthood.

One operation in 2017 was especially serious. Sisic had to be resuscitated during the procedure, which she underwent at 13, an ordeal she later described as touch and go and a turning point in how she understood her own body.

The aftermath of that operation left lasting damage. She developed nerve damage in her left leg and foot and had to learn to walk again, one of several setbacks she described as part of a childhood unlike other children's.

Her seventh procedure came in September 2025, according to Heute. It was the last operation she would undergo, and she shared the news with followers from her hospital bed.

How she told her story

Sisic did not keep her medical history private. In a 2024 interview with Heute, she recalled a childhood shaped by physical limits, from school sports weeks that went ahead without her to the long stretches of treatment that set her apart from other children.

She was also clear that sharing her story was not a bid for sympathy. She wanted to give courage to others facing health challenges rather than draw their pity.

My childhood was simply different, but it also made me strong.

In an Instagram post in August 2024, she thanked the pediatric cardiology specialists at Vienna General Hospital who had treated her, writing that their efforts had saved her life through many difficult moments and allowed her to build a fulfilling life despite her condition.

That openness became as much a part of her public identity as the crown. Through her reign she used social media to document repeated surgeries and recoveries, telling a story built around perseverance and gratitude rather than the glamour of the stage, and reaching people well beyond Austria's pageant audience.

A final post in gold

Sisic stayed active online in the weeks before she died. Her final Instagram post, on Aug. 12, showed her in a gold gown under the short caption "Golden moments."

Other recent posts showed her traveling. Earlier that summer she shared holiday photographs from Bosnia and Herzegovina, where her parents have roots in the Bosanska Posavina region, and from neighboring Croatia, whose community in Austria she was close to.

That was her last public message, posted less than a month before Mission Austria confirmed her death in its Monday tribute.

Tributes from two communities

Dengg said he was deeply shocked by her death. He told the outlet oe24 that she had been like a sister to him, especially during the time they held office together, and that everyone would miss her greatly.

The Croatian cultural community in Austria also mourned her, using the spelling Lucija Šišić. Miroslav Piplica, a family friend, wrote that she had gone much too soon, described her as a dear angel, and asked that her parents and family be given strength to bear the pain, saying she had made the Croatian community proud.

What is still unknown

The circumstances of Sisic's death remain undisclosed. Austrian outlets described it as unexpected. No authority has announced an investigation.

Neither Mission Austria nor the reports that followed her death linked it to her heart condition, and no medical explanation has been offered in public.

Mission Austria has not said what becomes of the title now. The 2026 competition had already been called off before she died.

In its tribute, Mission Austria described Sisic as a wonderful young woman and addressed her directly in a closing line, telling her she would always remain part of its Miss Austria family and wishing her rest in peace. The organization also sent its condolences to her family, friends and all those close to her.

Sisic is survived by her parents and a sister. As of the announcement of her death, no funeral arrangements had been made public.

Sisic had written after her seventh procedure that she was overjoyed to have it behind her and hoped for a break of several years. She died about a year later, at 22, still holding the crown she had won in 2024.
