Boy, 15, Arrested in Shooting That Killed Teen at Bakersfield Game

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and gang participation after a 17-year-old was shot and killed during a high school football game at Independence High School in Bakersfield, California, on the night of Aug. 21.

The Bakersfield Police Department announced the arrest on the morning of Aug. 22, saying the boy was taken into custody in the 7500 block of Stockdale Highway, miles from the school. Because of his age, he was not publicly identified. He was booked on suspicion of murder and participation in a criminal street gang. The Kern County district attorney's office has not said whether it will file a petition.

Investigators determined that the victim and the suspect were known to one another and that the shooting was not a random act of violence, police said. Neither the teenager who died nor the boy who was arrested attended Independence High School, the department said. Police said the violence appeared to stem from an altercation involving a group of people.

What happened at the stadium

Officers were called to the school shortly after 8 p.m. for reports of gunfire, according to police. They found the 17-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds inside the gates of the stadium, south of the football field, as the game was underway. He was taken to Kern Medical, where he was later pronounced dead. He has not been publicly identified, and the Kern County coroner has not released a cause of death.

Based on our preliminary investigation, we believe this began as an isolated incident ... which ultimately resulted in the shooting.

The gunfire sent players, families and other spectators running from the field.

The season opener between the Independence Falcons and the Centennial Golden Hawks was canceled shortly afterward.

The arrest

Police released a photograph showing the boy from behind as he was taken into custody, handcuffed, while an officer patted him down. Investigators believe no other suspects are outstanding, the department said. The gun used in the shooting has not been recovered.

The shooting occurred within the stadium's exterior fence but outside the chain-link barrier surrounding the field and track, police told Fox News Digital. The department said the violence was not directly tied to the football game, though it unfolded as hundreds of people watched the teams play only yards away.

Officers from the Kern High School District Police Department, the Bakersfield Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff's Office responded to the campus after the reports of gunfire. Bakersfield police and the school district police worked to process the scene, and the department credited the three agencies with the collaboration that led to the arrest.

In a written statement, the department extended sympathies to the family of the teenager who died and acknowledged the effect on the family of the boy arrested. It said two young lives and two families had been forever changed by an act of violence, and offered compassion to everyone affected by what it called a tragedy.

The department said the investigation remained open and reported no other injuries. It added that it had not been able to verify or validate videos of the shooting circulating on Kern County Activities, a local Instagram page.

Police said there was no active shooter and no ongoing threat to the broader community, and described the shooting as an isolated incident.

The response from officials

Kern High School District Superintendent Michael Zulfa said Independence High staff and members of the district police department responded immediately after the shooting to protect students and spectators and to help law enforcement and emergency personnel. The district is working closely with law enforcement as the investigation continues, and will review the circumstances surrounding the night of Aug. 21, he said.

Counseling and other support services will be available to students and staff, the district said, and it urged families to talk with their children, listen to their concerns and reach out to their schools if more help is needed.

Mayor Karen Goh said she stayed in contact with Police Chief Brent Stratton and Zulfa as their teams responded, and thanked the officers and school officials working to investigate and support those affected. Her office was closely monitoring the investigation, she said.

Gunfire reported at a second game

Authorities in South Los Angeles investigated a separate report the same night. A call about shots fired reached Los Angeles County sheriff's dispatch around 8:50 p.m. from West Athens, where King/Drew Magnet High School was playing San Pedro High School at Los Angeles Southwest College. Deputies found no victims and no evidence of a shooting, and spectators were evacuated. One woman was hurt as the crowd dispersed and was taken away in an ambulance, the sheriff's department said, adding that the nature of her injuries was unclear.

Where the investigation stands

Police said the 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder and participation in a criminal street gang. Investigators do not believe any additional suspects remain at large, and the department did not release the boy's name because of his age.

The Kern County district attorney's office has not said whether it will file a petition. Under current California law a 15-year-old cannot be transferred to adult court.

A season opener cut short

The game was the first of the season for high schools across Kern County, an opening night that draws families to stadiums each fall. The shooting happened as hundreds of people filled the Independence stands to watch the Falcons host the Centennial Golden Hawks.

Rosedale Union School District said some of its pupils were at the game and some were caught in a lockdown, and that its crisis intervention team would be available when classes resumed. A community event scheduled at Independence High School the next day was canceled.

Goh said what happened was heartbreaking but that it did not define Independence High School or Bakersfield, and that officials would keep working alongside schools and law enforcement to keep the community safe.

Support for those affected

Discovery Church said it would offer counseling on Aug. 26 at 7103 White Lane for students affected by the shooting. The district said counseling would remain available to students and staff who need it in the days ahead.

The 15-year-old remained in custody on Aug. 22, and police said the investigation was continuing.
